WHAT IS A MOUTHGUARD?
A mouthguard protects your teeth from injury. If you clench or grind your teeth, or if you play contact sports, you should be wearing a mouthguard.
Mouthguards are created differently, depending on the purpose.
SPORTS MOUTHGUARD
When it comes to sports equipment, a mouthguard should be on your list. Just as you would wear a helmet to protect our head, a mouthguard is worn to protect your teeth and jaw.
A sports mouthguard is made from shock-absorbing materials. Store-bought or over-the-counter mouthguards, commonly called ‘boil-and-bite’ mouthguards, are more cost effective. However, a sports mouthguard that is custom-made by your dentist will provide a better fit.
NIGHT MOUTHGUARD
If you wake up with sore jaw muscles, you may want to talk to your dentist. Clenching or grinding your teeth at night will cause muscle soreness and will wear away your teeth.
Wearing a mouthguard while you sleep will help protect not only your natural teeth, but also any dental work you have completed. A custom-made mouthguard worn at night is generally less bulky than a sports mouthguard.
SNORING
Do you snore at night? Mouthguards can help reduce snoring. If your snoring is interfering with your daily life, talk to your dentist. Dr. Kherani is located on Jasper Avenue. She is always happy to help. Book an appointment so you can discuss your needs with her. Call now: 780456-3338.
